Blackpool is the UK?s home for family holidays. Not everything has to be expensive, and advance planning is essential.
Blackpool has been a major tourist destination for over 100 years and is visited by over 14 million tourists a year. Most tourists visit Blackpool for a week long holiday or a weekend away, but the busy town set on the coast in North-West England has everything the family could want. There are so many things to do in Blackpool for kids, you might have problems deciding what to do first. In this article we?ll take a look at a few of the top attractions for the first time visitor with kids.
Blackpool?s Golden Mile
The promenade has always been the first thing visitors go to first and with three piers, golden beaches and higher than average sunshine hours it?s no surprise. The promenade is actually several miles long and is normally packed with visitors on a Summer afternoon and even donkey rides on the beach.
Along the length of the promenade is the UK?s oldest tram line with some of the vehicles going back over 100 years. The line starts at Squires Gate (near to Lytham St Annes) close to the sand dunes and wide beaches. This area is popular with locals and has a couple of cafe?s nearby for refreshments or an ice-cream. As you walk along past the South Pier, you come across a glitter ball rotating off the ground and is actually the largest glitter ball in the world ? spectacular at night.
Further along is Central Pier, the most popular pier of the three. It has large amusement areas and a small fair ground in the middle of the structure. Most of the promenade has had a face-lift and been widened to incorporate headlands where the crowds mingle. Opposite the famous Blackpool Tower the main headland will have outdoor entertainment during the Summer.
At the end of the promenade, the least commercialized pier, the North Pier sits closest to the main shopping area of the town. On the pier you?ll find tarot card readers and a theater catering for all the family in its entertainment Summer shows.
Along the majority of the Golden Mile, you?ll find amusement arcades and bars (even family bars) all lit up at night resembling Las Vegas but maybe without the good weather.
Stanley Park
Stanley Park is one of Lancashire?s best parks to visit. In the Summer it?s packed with families playing while the adults sit at the outdoor cafe. Well worth a visit is the lake area and watching the tourists on the boating area. On Summer Sunday afternoons, there is normally a band playing or some form of entertainment.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach resort
One of the UK?s biggest tourist attractions is the Blackpool Pleasure Beach Resort with its acres of white knuckle rides, gentler rides for small children and a wide variety of shows in the theater. For a family visiting the Pleasure Beach it can be expensive but buying ahead of time via their online site will save a fortune and by avoiding the peak summer holiday period.
Where to stay
Blackpool has plenty of hotels and it?s not normally difficult to find somewhere to stay, but it is best to book ahead when looking for family accommodation as some hotels maybe unsuitable for younger children
Overall families can have a fairly cheap time away in Blackpool with some forward planning via the internet. Always check out the main attractions as early as possible before visiting and take advantage of early booking deals.
